As most of you have heard, a slew of tornadoes ripped through North Carolina and other parts of the south on Saturday, April 16th. Bertie County was one of the hardest-hit regions in the state, reporting 14 deaths and many more injuries. The towns of Askewville and Colerain were left in shambles, and some of our students and friends were affected. Project H may not have tons of assets, but one thing we do have is a broad network of supporters, from whom we have

Following our final critique last week, we have decided on a design scheme for the Windsor Super Market! The chosen design still requires a lot of development, structural engineering, and tweaking, but this morning we presented the model and concept to the Windsor Town Council, who wholeheartedly approved. In the next few weeks, we’ll work with students to figure out details, material sources, as well as work with our structural engineer to put together working construction documents which will eventually be filed with the local

Final critique for Windsor Super Market schemes

April 10th, 2011
farmers market final critique

Last week, we were joined by three designer/architect friends for the final critique of our students’ Windsor Super Market designs, which we had narrowed down to five possible schemes. Emily Axtman and Miller Taylor, recent graduates from NC State’s architecture program, and Eric Wandmacher, one of Matt’s best friends and a talented builder, helped Matt and me critique each presented design, and collectively arrive at the one design that we believed to be the most promising to present to the Windsor Town Council this coming

Also thanks to our grant from Sappi Fine Paper’s Ideas That Matter grant, we had some Studio H mugs and t-shirts made for our students and their families (and, the t-shirts will no doubt be our uniform on the construction site this summer). While we don’t have enough to start giving them away to the general public, from now through June 1st, we’re offering your choice of mug or t-shirt (American Apparel sizes xs-xxl) to donors who contribute $100 or more. Currently we are fundraising

A public announcement to Bertie County residents: Be prepared to start seeing our green “Super” stickers popping up all over town. Coming up: a new billboard, postcards, t-shirts, a wall graphic, and more. If you want a stack of stickers, come by our Studio H headquarters behind Bertie High School, or

Design development on four market schemes

March 28th, 2011
super stevie market design

Following our public exhibition of all 10 design schemes on March 10th, we were then charged with the task of figuring out how to narrow 10 designs into one final, buildable structure. This is no easy task, considering that each design has something unique and valuable to contribute. After doing one of our truck tailgate huddles outside last week, we combined students around four design schemes, grouping students based on interest and the similarities of their designs, as well as team dynamic. The four designs

Studio H visits FabLab in Durham

March 21st, 2011
fablab

Yesterday, we were some of the lucky few who got to hang out at (and use!) the FabLab mobile fabrication trailer, which was parked at Durham’s American Tobacco Campus. The FabLab started at MIT, and now is comprised of over 50 trailers worldwide, outfitted with some of the most cutting-edge rapid prototyping and fabrication equipment available. The FabLab yesterday had 2 CNC overhead routers from Durham-based ShopBot, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, and much much more. We invited our students to make the trek

Teaching students how to MIG-weld

Screen shot 2011-03-16 at 4.36.00 PM

Today we had our first adventure in the metal shop, in which Matt and I did demonstrations with the MIG (metal inert gas) welder. We talked yesterday about the different types of steel (cold roll vs. hot roll, along with different steel stocks), and the science behind welding, including the definition of “inert” and ferrous vs. non-ferrous metals. Today, students got to try their hand with the welder itself, practicing the back-and-forth, slow-and-steady motion of moving the welder along a butt and fillet joint. I
